Chapter 19

She’d texted Jax throughout the week but hadn’t seen him. When he asked her out for dinner the next weekend, she’d jumped at the invitation.

The restaurant was on the water, and the scent of saltwater and grilled seafood hung in the air. The sun was making its final show, painting pinks, oranges, and purples into the clouds. They were at a small table tucked in the corner of the restaurant’s deck, watching the water traffic float by.

Laughter bubbled up from her lips as she listened to him tell a story about Harry from their training days. She leaned in a little closer as he dropped his voice.

“You smell great,” Jax said.

Heat rose from her chest to her neck. “Thank you.”

“Is your shampoo strawberry?”

She nodded. “It is.”

“I like it. I like being with you.”

She sat back and sighed. “Being with you is good. I feel much better. I didn’t think I would, but honestly, having you in my life has helped me.”

He took her hand and squeezed. “I’m glad to hear that.”

She noticed him looking across the water at one of the Navy ships. “Were you thinking of work?”

He shrugged. “Yes, and no. I’m Navy through and through. I like what it stands for, not that the military always gets it right, but the heart is there.”

“Stuff like that matters to you, like making a difference.”

He nodded, and she could see pride shining in his eyes. “I need to have a purpose.”

“I feel the same with my work.”

His gaze met hers. “Have you given any thought to what you want to do when you return to work?”

She shook her head. “Maybe. But I don’t have to decide for a while. I mean, I’ve always loved being a nurse. But—” She glanced away, her face going pale.

Jax covered her hand with his own, his thumb stroking her knuckles. “I understand. Sometimes, the weight of the past is too much.”

She didn’t want to make too much of it. “Maybe I’ll try something different.” She let go a heavy sigh. “Maybe not. I mean, I don’t want to toss out everything, but a fresh start would be good.” She sipped more tea. “Whatever I do, I want to help people.”

“I have no doubt you’ll find your place. You’re a good person.”

“Thank you. Sometimes I wonder.”

“Trust me, you’re good.”

“Even if I want to wish death on someone?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

He nodded and squeezed her hand again. “Yes, even then. Sometimes people do such disgusting things they have to be stopped.”

“Your job, is that why you do what you do?” She leaned in close, panic flashing through her. “I’m not judging at all.”

He glanced around, making sure no one was sitting too close. “I see things, and I can’t just let them go. There are people out there taking advantage of others on a daily basis. I trust that when we get called out to help, there’s someone like you or those men we rescued who need our help. I know you’re not judging.
